11:00 a.m. Prof. Dr. Karin Vosseberg - “Automation is not (yet) an automatism. Evaluation of the 2024 survey: Software quality in practice and research” [DE]

Test automation is a hot topic in software development. The short development cycles associated with agile projects are almost inconceivable without automation in quality assurance. Presentations on test automation with tools such as Cypress, Playwright or Puppeteer are booming. But what is the status of test automation in practice? What has changed since 2011? Let’s take a look at the data from the Software Testing in Practice and Research survey and evaluate the figures together. In addition to looking back, we will also look at and discuss the assessments of managers, developers and testers on the potential of artificial intelligence as a new trend.

11:00 a.m. Eddy Groen - “Thinking sustainability early” [DE]

Software engineering is undergoing the biggest transformation in its history. This time, the disruption is not coming from within – as was the case with the agile revolution, for example – but from emerging cross-cutting issues that are currently having a major impact on our society and are overturning alignments, processes and strategies. The two most important are sustainability and artificial intelligence (AI). These cross-cutting issues are not new, but after decades of ups and downs in their development, there have recently been sudden advances, such as the introduction of far-reaching legal requirements on climate protection and the sudden emergence of large language models.

While AI is rapidly gaining momentum and immediately became the main strategy of all big tech companies, sustainability is currently mainly synonymous with the major headache of sustainability reporting. A dangerous development! How can we ensure that sustainability doesn’t get bogged down in this, but is given the high status it should have in the digital world?

Digital sustainability is a fundamental aspect of development processes – both from a system perspective (sustainability of software) and in terms of functionality and its impact (sustainability through software). Life cycle assessment and the consideration of qualities such as maintainability, adaptability, resource efficiency and resource sufficiency play a central role here. Digital sustainability must be considered in the early phases of software development so that these properties are deeply anchored in the system. It is no longer just about transforming complex processes and business models, but also about designing digital solutions to be sustainable.

Find out how you can fulfill this responsibility in requirements engineering, digital design and architecture in order to actively design sustainable solutions!

Eddy Groen is a Senior Requirements Engineer at Fraunhofer IESE and heads the Special Interest Group on Sustainability at IREB. His work focuses on the design and quality assurance of complex systems, in particular to address the challenges of sustainability. He studied psychology, holds a PhD in computer science, wrote 25+ publications and worked as a quality manager.

9:00 a.m. Prof. Dr. Andreas Schmietendorf - “Evaluation aspects of AI-supported anonymization of German-language transcripts” [DE]

The anonymization process can also benefit from the possibilities offered by the use of artificial intelligence methods. The presentation addresses the following research questions in this regard:

Which NLP (Natural Language Processing) approach can identify personal data in German transcripts with sufficiently high accuracy? What qualitative properties do pre-trained AI models provide in connection with the anonymization of sensitive transcripts in the discourse of mediation? In terms of content, the presentation will first deal with the technical reference area of anonymization and the AI approaches that can generally be used for anonymization. Furthermore, details of a test of frameworks and tools for the anonymization of texts will be discussed. Corresponding evaluations relate to accuracy (entity recognition, entity linking, false positives, false negatives), privacy protection (degree of anonymization, risk assessment), efficiency (speed, memory consumption, scalability) and usability (integrability, configuration options, documentation). The final section summarizes the findings and provides an outlook on further topics.

11:00 a.m. Dr. Anne Kramer - “Testing of and with AI agents - concrete insights” [DE]

What sounds a lot like spy software à la James Bond is actually the next stage of AI development: AI agents that take on tasks independently with or without human assistance. In software testing, for example, an AI agent could carry out manual test cases. There is no doubt that this is feasible, but is it also useful? In her presentation, Anne gives us an insight into this lively field of research. We will first look at what an AI agent is, how it can be used in practice and how we can measure whether the result is useful. Smartestings AI Lab has been working on this very question of measurability for some time now. The results include specific, automatable metrics and a taxonomy of errors made by AI. The results of the associated experiments are exciting!
